The Significance of Cultivation in Confucian Civilization

Abstract: The tranquility and peacefulness of Confucians has become dominant in traditional lifestyle, way of getting along with people and patterns of belief throughout Chinese civilization. Confucian theory on personal cultivation and personal development, especially the wisdom concerning the growth of the personality of noble man embodies Confucian civilization. Confucian education is diversified and comprehensive, and the core of cultivation is the teaching of morality. Its purpose is to cultivate the noble man, the saint and the worthy. Being completely immersed and devoted to Six Arts such as rite and music, the noble man could cultivate his personality and regulate his temperament. The function of this training is to improve political and social practice. This kind of cultivation is characterized by the integration of life and world, knowledge and action, and the combination of internal and external experience. In the process of building contemporary civil society and cultivating free personality of citizens, it is an imperative duty for us to make full use of Confucian cultural resources of cultivating the body and mind as well as improving temperament.
